‘My fountain of youth’: Incredible 70-year-old who defies ageing process  with vegan diet of home-grown vegetables and rainwater

Sourced from Dailymail.co.uk

When Annette Larkins goes out with her  husband of 54 years, people assume she is his daughter.

The image of health, vitality and youth with  a petite size four frame and a line-free face, Mrs Larkins is in fact 70 years  old.

The resident of Miami-Dade County, Florida,  attributes her youthful looks to her raw vegan diet and grows almost everything  she eats in the garden she refers to as her ‘fountain of youth’.

70-year-old's secret to youth lies in the raw vegetables grown in her garden and rainwater.Fountain of youth: Annette Larkin looks at least 20  years younger than her 70 years which she credits to eating a completely raw,  vegan diet and growing all the food in her garden

During a visit to her home, ABC News  reporters explored the back yard, every of inch of which is covered in plants  and trees that grow the fruits and vegetables Mrs Larkins eats.

She told reporters: ‘My diet consists of  fruits, nuts, vegetables and seeds. I do a lot of sprouting of seeds and as you  can see from my garden and of course, these are the raw foods that I  eat.’

The sprightly septuagenarian did not always  eat this way. Husband of 54 years, Amos, owned a meat factory in the 1960′s and  it was around this time that his wife decided to go vegetarian.

27 years ago she went one step further by  turning vegan and now everything she eats is raw. Nothing cooked or processed  every passes her lips.

Home grown: The Miami-Dade resident grows all her own  food and collects rainwater that she drinks and water the plants with. She also  juices all the fruits and vegetables she grows

Mrs Larkins also juices her fruits and  vegetables and collects rain water to drink and to water her garden.

For his part, Mr Larkins wishes he had  followed his wife’s example. Looking considerably older, he also takes  prescription medicine for diabetes and high blood pressure while Mrs Larkins  won’t even take an aspirin.

When they walk down the street together, he  admitted: ‘They’ll ask me what am I doing with this young girl.’

Recognising how positively she could  influence others, the formidable 70-year-old has already written two booklets  titled: Journey to Health and produced a DVD about her nutritional  regime.

‘I am very vibrant, I have lots of energy, as  I told you before, I am up no later than 5:30 in the morning as a rule, and I am  ready to go’ she told ABC.

Her husband agreed, gushing: ‘She’s an  amazing person though. Oh man, I mean really. She does everything- build  computers, make all her own clothes, grow her own food, speaks three languages.  It’s amazing.’

So what exactly is Yuri Elkaim’s ‘Eating for Energy’ raw food health plan?

‘Eating for Energy’ is a comprehensive guide on how to start and follow the much acclaimed raw food diet by the health and fitness guru, Yuri Elkaim, focusing on food for energy.

When I first heard about the diet, I thought to myself ‘this is not for me’. I’ve heard about raw food diets before and felt that it was just too difficult to incorporate into my daily life. But after reading Yuri’s book, it really changed the way I looked at health and how to incorporate energy foods into my diet.

Eating for Energy shows you how easy it is to start feeling healthy and full of energy by following the raw food diet health plan. More importantly, it shows just how easy it is to follow the raw food diet and start taking control of your health.

Yuri teaches us that the raw food meal plan essentially means a ‘low acid, high alkaline’ diet. What does low acid, high alkaline mean? One of the biggest challenges we now face is that because “our” diet is so high in refined grains, animal products, and processed foods, we are constantly consuming a high acid diet.
And this is bad news because when your body is acidic we become prone to sickness and disease! Also, the more acidic you are, the more easily you will store fat. Eating for Energy also explains the concept of digestion and the benefit of natural food enzymes, which are missing in cooked, processed food.

It also illustrates how raw food provides greater vibrational energy that processed food. Your body recognizes the food it’s given and you will feel more energetic and have an easier time metabolizing fat instead of storing it. Find out the secrets of how certain foods for energy will also give you tremendous fat burning capacity!
While all this may sound technical, Yuri explains the concepts effortlessly in a way that is so simple to understand, relate to, and apply.

Why is Yuri’s programme different from other raw food diets?

Like you, I don’t have all day to wait for my meals to dehydrate or sit around. I like quick, fresh food that tastes great. And that’s exactly what you get with the 120 recipes in Eating for Energy. They take less than 10 minutes prepare and they satisfy even the pickiest of “foodies”, including myself!

Eating for Energy is not a diet. It’s a step-by-step food for energy program that helps you transition into a healthier way of eating by adding more raw living foods into your diet.

However, if your current lifestyle has revolved around fast or processed food and you are looking to make some changes for the better, you may find some of the information in the book to be overwhelming. Nevertheless it is a very useful guide if you are really serious about improving your health.

Also, some of the foods and supplements that Yuri recommends may not be available at your local grocer, especially if you require organic fruits and vegetables. You’ll most likely need to visit a health food store to get the ingredients for some of the recipes. That said however, I tend to improvise by using substitutes that are equally healthy and within the raw food diet health plan.

Overall, what do I think?

energy foodsEating for Energy is a great nutritional guide to not only boost your energy levels and health but also provides you a step-by-step approach to transform your eating habits. Yuri EIkaim’s food for energy recipes are so easy to follow and practical, making it easy to incorporate raw foods into your diet. Whether or not you chose to follow the entire plan, the advice and even following parts of the plan will still be enormously beneficial. These recipes are all about simplicity, quickness, and fresh ingredients. In fact, this is what my diet usually looks like (instead of what I showed you above).

Green smoothies – Drinking green smoothies for breakfast (or at any point of the day) is a great way to ensure that you are getting super nutrition at the beginning (and throughout) of each day.

Try different fruit combinations, and increase the nutritional value of the smoothie by adding “booster” ingredients such as wheatgrass, hemp, linseeds or fish oil.
Here’s one of my personal favourite energy foods smoothie recipes…

The Green Monster

1 apple
1 pear
1 banana
1 head of romaine lettuce
1/2 handful of parsley
4-5 stalks of kale, stemmed
Juice of 1/2 a lime
2-3 cups of water

1. Simply blend everything together in a blender and this will give you about 1 liter of green smoothie goodness!

Next…

Let’s move on to salads. Perhaps the 2nd easiest way to increase your raw food intake, is to serve a huge raw salad with every meal.
As well as the raw veggies and salad ingredients you can also maximize the flavour and nutrition of the salad by throwing in nuts, seeds, fruit and oils.

Finally, the 3rd way to help get more raw fruits and veggies into your body is to… simply snack on your favourite
fruits and veggies throughout the day.

It’s really as easy as that.

In his book Eating for Energy, Yuri Elkaim provides a comprehensive guide to how and why certain raw food can boost your energy and health. In the article below he reveals 5 of the energy foods.

If you are like most of us, you are always on the search for more energy. Whether it is your morning cup of coffee, a quick sugary pick-me-up in the mid-morning, or an energy drink during the long hours of the afternoon that span between your lunch and your dinner, a lot of us seem to be running on fumes a lot of the time. While the best cure for those tired feelings can be a good night’s sleep, that is not always enough. In order to keep running at our best, we need to make sure that our bodies are given the proper fuel in order to run optimally. And while caffeine and sugar might seem to do in a pinch, they are not the best answers. Instead, we might want to turn our focus to raw food items that will do a whole lot more to naturally boost our energy levels.

Avocados get a terrible reputation among healthy eaters as being full of fats, and while that might be technically true, it is not as bad as you might think. The fats contained in avocados are in fact highly beneficial to cognitive functions. A healthy helping of avocado ñ either as part of a raw guacamole-like dip, or sliced into a salad, can give you an energy boost, not to mention a great buttery taste.

Spinach might have been Popeye’s favorite food, but why on earth would he eat it out of a can? Fresh spinach is a wonderful source, not only of iron, but all sorts of vitamins. Whether it is mixed in as part of a fresh green smoothie in the morning, or eaten whole for any meal, spinach will do exactly what the cartoons promised ñ sort of. The minerals and vitamins are great for your muscles when you need to combat that tired feeling.

Oranges are wonderful as an energy food as well. Long given to athletes as a half-time snack, oranges provide natural sugars that give the body quick energy. Whether you make your own juice in the morning or snack on a whole fruit during the day, the vitamin C is great for your immune system ñ and nothing saps our strength like feeling sick.

Strawberries are what we call calorie-negative foods ñ that is, foods that actually take more calories to process than they provide to the body. But while these succulent little wonders are great for their calorie-burning potential, they are also loaded with vitamins that will perk up your body.

And while there are plenty of nuts that will help in a pinch, almonds are the universal favorite when it comes to a spike in energy. Full of the protein that your body needs after a workout, a handful of nuts will help you to recover after exercise, making your muscles less sore the next day.

If you add more of these five wonder food for energy to your diet, you will find yourself with a whole lot more energy. It might even give you enough spring in your step to skip that next cup of coffee.
